The Great North 10K – Gateshead

12 Jul

Sunday 9th July 2017, that was the day I was going to break my 10k pb and tame ‘The Slog on the Tyne’ that destroyed me last year.

I’m currently working in Leeds near Temple Newsam and been taking advantage of doing some training on the hills around here to help in my destruction of ‘The Slog on the Tyne’.

So I arrived early and did a little bit of stretching and a nice easy 1 mile warm up run and then headed off to my pen (white wave) behind 200 Gurkhas.

But don’t worry not a single one of them got in my way, they were lucky as they didn’t want me having words with them (or was that me that was lucky?).

Anyway, we were off. Through the industrial estate, around past the Baltic and the Sage. This is where the eventual winner of the Men’s race Matty Hynes passed me (okay he was on his way back) and then the eventual winner of the Woman’s race Sarah Laverty (again on her way back). Then it was along the edge of the Tyne (things get a little congested here as it’s an out and back course and this stretch is very narrow in places) to the 5k mark in around 24(ish) minutes and well on to beat my current 49:50 pb.

Coming back is pretty much all uphill after the first downhill 5k and the Sun was well and truly up and getting HOT!!! I hit 5 miles in just over 39 minutes and I’m thinking “this is still on”, the heat was really getting to me though and then I hit the bottom of ‘The Slog on the Tyne’….. DESTROYED!!! Me Not it, even at the top I was still thinking this might be on (it really wasn’t lol). I powered into the Stadium thinking ‘turn left not far to go’

unfortunately I never looked at watch to check how far and the course had changed slightly from last year (didn’t check that either) and…. pretty much a full lap to go! Finishing in 50:47

I decided that I wanted to take part in  Marathon before I’m 50 and as I have just turned 49 thought it was time to get my backside in gear. To get Me ready for that I am doing a few races this year:

  1. Gateshead 10K ✔
  2. Durham City 10K
  3. Middlesbrough 10K
  4. Redcar Half Marathon

Then next year I will take part in a full marathon, London if accepted and if not then I will look for another one around March/April 2018.

Then I thought that I would go one step further and so on Saturday 19th May 2018 I am taking part in Tough Mudder along with Reece, 10-12 miles of some tough obstacles, take a look at the video here https://toughmudder.co.uk/
